Need for Speed: Carbon

Released in 2006, Need for Speed: Carbon took customization to the next level with the addition of the AutoSculpt feature that allows players to shape and mold exterior modifications on their vehicles to their liking. Tuning also got a boost, giving racers the opportunity to tune a car for things like better acceleration or top speed.

In Carbon, racers now had a wingman, each having specific skills that assist in getting you across the finish line first. Nighttime racing and drifting were both included, returning to the dark backdrop of the city in Underground.

Advancing in career mode required racers to take over territory on the map controlled by different gangs. Opponents had their cars decorated in gang colors for races in territories they owned. Finish in first and their roadways become yours.

A challenging new racing mode called Canyon Events was introduced in Carbon. There were four different categories, with each involving a race down a winding canyon course. Hit the guard rails and they’ll break, sending your ride off a cliff and into oblivion.

Canadian actress and model Emmanuelle Vaugier provided the voice of Nikki, an ally who guides racers along the storyline in career mode.

Nighttime racing was back in Need for Speed: Carbon after taking the evening off in Most Wanted. Set five years after Underground 2 in the city of Palmont, the area was originally split into four districts for each rival crew.

Need for Speed Most Wanted

Continuing the story-based, open-world approach of the Underground games, Most Wanted -- a launch title for the Xbox 360 -- added several interesting new types of gameplay to the Need for Speed universe. Your car now had a "Rap Sheet", keeping track of the coolest, most dangerous moves and memorable police chances that you pulled off while in the driver's seat.

Being chased by cops was a little different in Most Wanted, as a "heat" system determined how much force the police used in trying to capture you. Depending on your heat level, different types of police vehicles were chasing you -- ranging from unmarked SUVs to Pontiac GTOs. Roadblocks, spike strips, and police helicopters made evading capture more difficult, not to mention the Corvette-driving cop, Sergeant Cross, who would stop at nothing to take you down. If you got busted too many times, you had to pay to get your car out of the impound lot.

To unlock some of the new cars, parts, and locales in Most Wanted, players had to defeat one of 15 "Blacklist" racers. When you did, you had a chance to get their car. Some of the vehicles driven by Blacklist racers included a Ford Mustang GT, Porsche Cayman S, and Chevrolet Corvette C6.

Raising the bar set by Underground 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted takes place in another fictional city, this time called Rockport. The expansive map, with three different regions, is designed for a great deal of exploration. Unlike Underground and Underground 2, though, races take place between dawn and dusk and your racer now has several "safe houses" scattered around the map when the heat gets too intense.
